Sustainability at Smiths News Recycle
Because sustainability isn’t a project — it’s our everyday practice.
At Smiths News Recycle, we believe it’s important to do the right thing and to be aware of the impact of our actions. However, we acknowledge that we still need to do more, be more, and care more – creating a sustainable future for our colleagues to work for, and our partners and suppliers to work with.
Regulatory Compliance
We operate as a fully licensed waste carrier and ensure all our recycling services meet UK environmental and waste management regulations. To meet the requirements of the Environmental Permitting regime all our sites operate under registered waste exemptions and/or regulatory position statements.
This includes the compliant handling, movement and processing of:
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Other regulated waste streams
Every collection is backed by fully compliant documentation, giving you a complete audit trail and waste transfer/consignment notes that evidence your duty of care. This ensures full traceability and total peace of mind for your business.
Environmental Responsibility
We are aligned to the Smiths News sustainability strategy, with a shared commitment to reducing our environmental impact and supporting circular economy outcomes.
Our approach focuses on:
- Maximising recycling and minimising waste to landfill
- Ensuring responsible handling and processing of all collected materials
- Reducing emissions through efficient routing and early morning logistics
- Supporting retailers in meeting their own environmental goals
From tote boxes to vapes, every item we collect is managed with the same commitment to environmental care.
Accreditations & Management Systems
Our operations are underpinned by robust management systems, giving customers confidence that we work to recognised international standards.
We hold the following accreditations:
- SafeContractor: Demonstrating our commitment to health & safety, sustainability and ESG.
- ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System: Demonstrating structured environmental governance and continual improvement.
- ISO 45001 – Health & Safety Management System: Ensuring safe working practices, risk management and strong operational controls.
This reflects our dedication to maintaining high standards across our network and continually improving our performance.
Safe & Compliant Handling of Waste Streams
Different materials require different levels of care, and we take this responsibility seriously.
We ensure safe, compliant handling and transportation of:
Vapes and lithium batteries
Small electricals (sWEEE)
Retail takeback materials
Our processes are designed to ensure retailers remain fully compliant with their WEEE obligations. We are committed to supporting our customers by keeping them informed about regulatory requirements and guiding them through any changes in wider waste legislation, including Simpler Recycling.
Ethical & ESG Commitments
We are committed to being a responsible partner — for our customers, our people and the environment.
Our ESG principles include:
- Transparency in our operations and reporting
- Ethical management of waste and materials
- Supporting circular economy outcomes
- Reducing carbon impact through smarter logistics
- Championing safe working practices across our supply chain
We aim to be more than a recycling provider — we aim to be a partner that supports your sustainability journey.
